HOPP -- Healthy Options for the People of the Pottstown Region
The HOPP Program is a collaborative effort of Fellowship Farm, the YWCA Tri-County Area, and Jon Ross & Associates. HOPP is made possible through a grant from the Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation.
HOPP at Fellowship Farm: The Community Garden
The HOPP program began at the beginning of the year with a buzz of activity and outreach. Classes and workshops began soon after and are now well underway at the YWCA Tri-County area, Fellowship Farm, and at locations in the Pottstown regional community. As spring drew near plans took shape for the Fellowship Farm HOPP Community Vegetable Garden and Family Camp.
Our vegetable garden provides individual garden beds -some raised, some at ground level-- for area individuals and families to grow their own vegetables for healthy eating and cost savings. Gretchen Lea, Master Gardener, volunteer extraordinaire, and Fellowship Farm Board member has given hours and hours of her time as well as her valued expertise to get the garden growing with the outstanding assistance of Val Udell, long time Farm volunteer and botanical expert who is a solid resource for the project. Working along with Gretchen and Val to help with getting the project up and running has been Dave Bradley, volunteer and good friend to the Farm.
Gardeners tend their individual plots in the 'earth friendly', almost fully organic garden, at their convenience during the week and on weekends, and have access to Gretchen's gardening help and advice in person and via Email. Potatoes, broccoli, tomatoes, beans, herbs, peppers and cucumbers are already starting to grow, it is wonderful to see kids, and their parents enjoy each other's company while they work.
Soon we will begin to work with a nutritionist on healthy and delicious food preparation and sound menu planning. The harvesting should be quite a treat, and a great sense of accomplishment.
If you are interested in the nutritional cooking and healthy menu planning of the project and you live in the greater Pottstown area, even if you are not participating in the Community Garden itself, please call the Fellowship Farm office at (610) 326-3008 for information or to register. There is no charge for any of the HOPP program activities for people living in the Pottstown region.
We are also starting to plan for garden activities for the fall and next spring. If you think this would be something you would enjoy and benefit from, let us know and we will put you on the list for the next phase of our exciting garden activities.
Come visit the garden and enjoy the peaceful and beautiful atmosphere of the Farm. We look forward to welcoming you. As we say at the Community Garden, "Have a bountiful day!"
