Diversity Awareness Programs of Fellowship Farm

Fellowship Farm has been helping people of different backgrounds build meaningful relationships since our beginnings in 1931. Until 1965, we fought for equality under the law. Today, we press for equal opportunity and access to resources. If we are to build a truly democratic, just and inclusive society, this work is ever more important, as our society becomes increasingly multi-racial, multi-ethnic and multi-cultural. In our trainings, Fellowship Farm presents diversity awareness as a necessary social building block and professional competency for all, no matter what community you live in.

Diversity training provides the tools to confront stereotypes, which we define as inaccurate and oppressive ideas that groups sometimes hold about one another. They are usually rooted in fear and lack of knowledge, and are often promoted by our mass media.

Some of the most common stereotypes involve race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, economic status and age. When we use these inaccurate ideas to make judgments about others, both parties are hurt.

But when we see that stereotypes oppress and separate people from one another, we can freely choose an ethic based on inclusiveness and respect. We can then take steps toward creating an environment where all feel supported, so that true community can emerge.
